With the first day of spring quickly approaching, there is no better time to start thinking about your home's landscaping. In this guide, we at Tree Pro Ohio walk you through Spring Tree Care Tips that will keep your trees healthy and your yard looking beautiful.
After the snow has melted and it's warm enough to spend some time outside, you should inspect your trees, shrubs, and other landscaping. You want to look for broken or splintered branches, signs of pests such as missing bark or very brittle bark, and any power lines that run through your tree's branches. If you find broken or hanging branches during your inspection, best to give us a call at 614-957-1113 to evaluate the damage so we can safely remove the broken limb.
Make sure to rake up any debris that may have fallen during the winter. Leaves that are left to decompose are home to multiple pests that can damage your trees and shrubs. Quickly disposing of any fallen leaves, twigs, or branches helps lessen the likelihood of infection.
Fertilizing your trees, shrubs, and perennials is a great way to provide necessary nutrients that may be missing in the soil. After the ground has completely thawed, you can apply a fertilizer to help nourish your trees and other plants. We recommend getting a soil test kit to determine what nutrients your plants may need more of.
Treatment for Disease and Pests
A crucial aspect of Tree Care is to actively treat any diseases or pests that you identify in your inspection. Early detection and treatment can end up saving you thousands of dollars by preventing the need for tree removal.
We recommend tree pruning in the spring. It's often best to trim trees and summer/fall flowering shrubs in the spring before leaves begin to come back in. You want to remove any dead or damaged branches that you see, and that's often easier before any leaves come in.
We love celebrating Arbor Day by planting a new tree! There are many great nurseries here in the Columbus area that can help get you set up with the right tree for your space, or you can give us a call for recommendations.
Water Adequately
If you plant a new tree or shrub, you need to ensure it gets adequate water. While that usually isn't a problem with the ordinarily wet springs we have here in Columbus, you'll want to check the forecast and if there are any stretches of dry weather, make sure to water your new trees and plants thoroughly. The goal is to soak the base of the tree or shrub so that water can make it to the root zone, which is usually between 12-18 inches deep. The best way to do this is to water slowly so that moisture has a chance to infiltrate the lower levels of soil. You will create runoff if you water too quickly, and the new foliage will not benefit from the water.
Adding new mulch to your flower beds and the base of trees and shrubs is a great way to care for your trees as well as to beautify your yard. Mulch helps retain moisture and can prevent weeds. When laying much, you want to make sure not to pack it down but rather to leave it somewhat loose so water can pass through and to the soil.
Spring is a great time to be outside and to begin your tree care regimen. We hope the eight steps listed above help you achieve your dream yard. Don't hesitate to give us a call or send us a message if you tree care questions or for any tree service needs - Tree Pro Ohio is here to serve you!
